Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University volleyball hosted Ave Maria, Tuesday night, sweeping the Gyrenes, 3-0. A balanced attack powered the Warriors, with freshman Sam Burton leading the way with 10 kills. Fellow freshman Sophie Rossard also had a strong match, registering 35 assists.
It was Ave Maria who controlled the early goings in the first set, with the Gyrenes taking a 9-3 lead. Candiss Baxter led a Webber International run, scoring three kills as the Warriors tied the match up at 12-12.
The teams would trade points the rest of the set, eventually bring the score to 24-24. The Warriors would take the next two points to win the set, 26-24.
Set two was just as tightly contested. Again, Ave Maria took the first lead of the set, going ahead 8-4. Late in the match, Katie Schueman and Lauren Dehls lead a Warrior charge, putting Webber International ahead 16-14. A few points later, Rossard scored three consecutive aces, giving Webber International the final push to take the second set, 25-21.
The third set saw Ave Maria lead the majority of the way. With the score at 16-15 in favor of the Gyrenes, Webber International went on a five-point run, eventually taking the final set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
The Warriors are back in action, Wednesday, October 21, in a road match against College of Costal Georgia.
