Volleyball Splits Miami Road Trip

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Webber International University volleyball played two Sun Conference road matches this week, facing off against St. Thomas and Florida Memorial. The Warriors fell to the Bobcats, 3-0, but bounced back with a, 3-1, victory over the Lions.

The Warriors and Bobcats faced off, Friday night. Webber International pushed St. Thomas to the edge in the first set, but eventually fell 25-23.  The Warriors struggled to gain a foothold in the second set, losing out, 25-9. Webber International fought hard in the third set, but fell, 25-19, dropping the match, 3-0.

Freshman Sam Burton collected a team-high nine kills, with fellow newcomer Sophie Rossard adding 15 assists.

Webber International played well against the Lions, Saturday, fending off Florida Memorial attacks multiple times.

The first set was tightly contested, with the Warriors needing 26 points to take it. Webber International took an early 6-1 lead, but Florida Memorial would push back, eventually tying things up at 9-9. The teams would trade point for the rest of the set with Webber International coming out on top.

The Warriors dominated the second set, winning out, 25-12. A 12-1 run early on, put Webber International ahead, 11-4, and the Warriors never looked back.

Florida Memorial pushed back in the third set, taking it 25-17. Down only three late in the set, the Lions hunkered down to cut in into the Warrior lead, 2-1.

The fourth set was neck-and-neck, but the Warriors led the whole way. The Warriors largest lead was at 16-7. The Lion would claw back in the set but, Webber held on to win out, 25-21, taking the match, 3-1.

Rossard was instrumental in the win, registering 13 kills, 20 assists and two-and-a-half blocks on the night. Senior Katie Scheuman added 13 important kills of her own.

The Warriors are back in action, Tuesday, October 20 hosting Ave Maria.
