Warriors Drop Season Opener to UVA-Wise Cavaliers

WISE, VA. –
The Webber International University's Football team hit the road this weekend on a long bus ride to Wise, VA. for their season opener against the UVA-Wise, Cavaliers and lost, 29-37.

 The first half was a back and forth battle with neither team dominating the field. The Cavs jumped out to an early lead with a 73 yard touchdown pass just 18 seconds into the game. With 11:27 left in the first quarter the Warriors responded with a 24 yard touchdown run by Deonte Fielder. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied, 7-7.

In the second quarter Parrish Kelley from UVA-Wise ran back a 59 yard interception for a touchdown with 13:10 left in the half. The Warriors rallied back from the interception and in less than 3 minutes scored their second touchdown run with a handoff to Deonte Fielder that resulted in the 6 yards needed to tie the game with 10:20 left in the first half. The first half ended in a tie, 14-14.

The second half started out with both teams fighting hard to put the game away. The Cavs scored a field goal at 11:50 left in the 3rd putting them up by 3. The Warriors then answered with their own field goal with 7:12 left in the 3rd to tie the game once again. The Warriors then scored when Ricky Carlson returned a punt of 51 yards for 6 points. The Cavs blocked the extra point attempt with 00:29 seconds in the 3rd. On the following kickoff the Cavs returned the ball 94 yards for a touchdown and extra point to take a 1 point led ending the 3rd, 24-23.

In the fourth quarter the Cavs scored first with 1:43 left in the game putting them up 8 points, 31-23. With the Warriors down and needing a touchdown and a two point conversion to tie the game the Warriors pushed down the field with great strength. Making their way down to UVA-Wise 21 yard line Chirs Hart passed the ball to Jamal Rodman which resulted in a touchdown for the Warriors with 00:28 seconds left in the game. The Warriors then attempted a 2 point conversion that was no good, 29-31. The Warriors set up for an onside kick to get the ball back to try and win the game unfortunately the Cavs were ready for the onside kick as they returned the attempt for a 41 yard touchdown winning the game, 37-29.

Offensively Deonte Fielder led the Warriors when he rushed 20 for 169 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. Jamal Rodman led the Warriors in receptions with 6 for 50 yards.

Defensively the Warriors were led by Damion Smith with 5 tackles, as Matthew Davidson and Ricky Carlson added with 4 tackles a piece.

Quarterback, Torrance Moise, was 9 for 17 with 1 interception for 59 yards. Chris Hart was 4 for 10 for 53 yards.

The Warriors record falls to 0-1 and the Cavs record climbs to 1-0.

The Warriors will return to Legion Field on September 10, 2011, as they host Shorter University starting at 1:30 p.m.
