THOMASVILLE, GA. - Following their 0-0 stalemate with Brewton Parker, the Warriors were looking to pick up their first victory of the regular season, as they found themselves up against the Night Hawks of Thomas University. Unfortunately for Webber, the Night Hawks' home advantage proved crucial, as they came away with an important 1-0 victory.
Prior to kickoff, a remembrance ceremony took place in memory of those who lost their lives on September 11 2001, which featured the presentation of the colors and the national anthem, alongside a prayer and minute of silence.
The Night Hawks took the lead in the 13th minute. After some clever link-up play with Anthony Forde, Jean Vega slotted the ball past
Matthew Brust to put his team ahead.
Webber's best chance on the first half fell to
Martin Vega. Following a long ball from
Julen Esteban, Vega found himself one-on-one with Andi Hoffer, but the sophomore forward steered his effort wide of the mark.
Freshman
Leonardo Cid also came close to equalizing in the second half, when his long-range effort forced an impressive fingertip save from Hoffer.
The Warriors were reduced to ten men in the dying stages of the game, after
Andy Hernandez saw red for a second bookable offence.
Coach Cockburn said, “Despite the loss, I am proud of the players' effort in the second half. We defended well and only conceded one goal, but need to start taking our chances. We also need as much support as possible on Wednesday, when we face Ave Maria.”
