Warriors Defeat Wildcats 5-1

Despite a 2-0 loss against Rollins earlier this week, the Warriors bounced back in perfect fashion, with a comfortable 5-1 victory over the Johnson & Wales Wildcats.

Julen Esteban gave Webber the lead in the 30th minute. Michael Dowson's deflected shot fell into the path of the Spaniard, who slotted the ball home from six yards to claim his first ever goal for the Warriors.

Javier Zorro Sandoval added to the scoring in the 31st minute. The Colombian latched onto a perfect through ball from Andy Hernandez, before dribbling it round Jose Barreto and placing it into the empty net.

In what was arguably the goal of the game, Gonzalo Ruiz made it three in the 42nd minute. Esteban turned provider for his fellow countryman, having played a beautiful diagonal ball into the Wildcats' box. Ruiz kept his composure and steered the ball into the back of the net with a diving header.

The Warriors hit four in the 50th minute.  Miguel Leon found Vincente Munoz open on the left, who zoomed past Cris Barbosa and took a shot on goal. While the freshman was denied by Barreto, Mark Arajuo was lying in wait to tap the ball in from five yards out.

Webber got their fifth and final goal in the 68th minute. Persistent pressure from Conor Dunne led to a misjudged pass from Philip Flores. Roc Fabregas Felip picked up the loose ball and skilfully took it round Flores, before striking it into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

While the Wildcat's did get one goal on the score sheet, it was Ruiz who accidentally knocked the ball into the Warriors' net. Making his conference debut for Webber, freshman goalkeeper Angel Rodriguez rolled the ball out to Ruiz. Leslis Daniel managed to steal the ball from the Spanish livewire, although he fought back to smash it clear. His misjudged clearance rolled past Rodriguez and gave the Wildcats a reason to celebrate.

Coach Cockburn said: “Despite the bad pitch, the players kept their discipline and managed to adapt to the conditions, which displayed their individual and collective maturity. Hopefully we can carry the same mentality to Northwood on Sunday.”
