Mt. Vernon, GA - The Webber International men's basketball team started a 7 game stretch of road games by splitting in the two games they played in the Brewton Parker Classic in Mount Vernon, Georgia.
On Friday night, the Warriors were able to pull out a 66-58 win over the Brewton Parker College Barrons. Four different Warriors scored in double figures, led by Marvin Williams' 15. The oldest of the Marlar brothers, Luke, proved that defense isn't the only thing that he brings to the table. His 14 points all came in the second half and his 3 timely 3-pointers proved to be instrumental in helping the Warriros pull out the win. He also had a team high 8 rebounds. Tyler Hoevenaar was one assist shy of recording a double-double, and had 12 points to go with those 9 assists. Tyrell Harper added 10 points and Halston Schaffer chipped in 7 points and pulled down 5 rebounds.
With the win, the Warriors improved to 2-0 on the season and by losing their opener, the Barrons started out their season 0-1.
Saturday afternoon wasn't so kind to the Warriors, who lost the battle to the Southern Polytechnic State University Hornets 53-64. The teams were neck and neck with each other and traded the lead back and forth several times in what proved to be a very physical game. The Hornets were able to knock down some big jump shorts in the final minutes of the game and used a well balanced scoring attack to outlast the Warriors. Darrien Beachem led the Hornets with 15 points.
Tyrell Harper was able to get it going for the Warriors on the offensive end, but aside from his 20 points and the 10 that Marvin Williams was able to contribute, the Warriors had a hard time putting the ball in the basket. Tyler Hoevenaar did his best to keep his teammates involved in the offense and led all players with 7 assists. Williams, Harper, Halston Schaffer, and Mark Marlar led a team based attack on the glass, and each finished with 6 rebounds.
With the loss, the Warriors return to Babson Park carrying a 2-1 record and the Hornets, with their second win in as many days, improved their record to 2-0.
