Babson Park, Fla. – In a remarkable comeback, the Webber International University men's tennis team shocked NCAA-II Florida Southern, 5-4. Florida Southern was up 4-1 in the match, but the Warriors fought back winning all four remaining singles matches to notch the win for the now 1-0 WIU team. The match was played at the WIU Campus Courts Complex in Babson Park.
Florida Southern led 2-1 after the doubles competition. The only Webber team that garnered a win was the #3 team of
Daniel Spurny and
Marcel Schmitt. They defeated the Southern team 8-4.
After falling behind in the match 4-1, the Warriors comeback started with
Alwin Leysner winning at the #6 singles, 6-2, 6-3. That was followed by Spurny winning #1 singles at 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Carl Ackered tied the match up at 4-all when he won at #4 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Finishing it off for the Warriors at #5 singles, was
Marcel Schmitt pulling out a marathon at 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Webber International ranked #18 in the nation in NAIA, next faces NCAA-I Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, at Webber, in a 1:00 pm match.
