3 Webber International Bowlers Break Guinness World Record of Most Strikes in One Minute

1/27/2011 10:55:30 AM

(January 24, 2011) Lake Wales – On a quiet Monday afternoon at the Kegel Training Center, the world record for most strikes in one minute fell within fifteen minutes of the first attempt.   Twenty-five of the current Webber International University bowling team members attempted to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the most strikes in one minute for an individual.  Warrior bowlers were joined by long-time Team USA bowler John Janawicz and WIU women's coach Randy Stoughton, who also attempted the record.

The rules stipulated that participants could use multiple bowling balls as well as multiple lanes.  The world-record attempt utilized the 2011 Women's U.S. Open pattern and was completed on Lanes 5-8 at the Kegel Training Center.  Lanes 7 & 8 are not new to records.  This was the same pair in which Wes Malott bowled two perfect 300 games on the ESPN live broadcast of the King of Bowling in 2009.

The most strikes in one minute record fell within fifteen minutes of the first attempt.  Webber freshman Kristis Sergejevas from Lithuania rolled seven strikes within sixty seconds as the crowd of fifty spectators enthusiastically cheered.  When asked later, Krisits simply replied, “It was tiring and exhausting….You can't concentrate at all.”

Two-time AMF World Cup participant Marcelo Suartz, of Brazil, knocked down seven strikes to tie the record set forty-five minutes earlier.  “I knew if I stayed patient and calm, I could make it,” Suartz said after.

Yet, the team wasn't finished with the impressive feat.  Floridian Colin Champion, a 117 lb. freshman, rolled eight (8) strikes within one minute to break the world-record set early by both Suartz and Sergejevas.  “I tried to throw normally instead of fast,” when asked how he did it.

The record is still pending approval by the Guinness world record authorities.

The previous  world record was held by Tomas Leandersson of Sweden who rolled six strikes in one minute on October 24, 2001 at Sundbybergs Bowling Hall.

The Webber International Men's Bowling Team is the consensus number one team in the country according to the latest National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association and Bowling Writers Association of America polls.  The Women's team is a consensus top 10 in these polls.

Both teams have trained at the Kegel Training Center since the start of the programs.  The women were national champions in their first year of competition.  The men broke the record for highest baker game in history in their first year en route to a 3rd place in the national semi-final.
