Babson Park, Fla. – The Webber International University men’s tennis team defeated the University of St. Francis (IL) 8-1 Monday afternoon on the WIU Campus Tennis Courts. This marked the fourth consecutive win for the Warriors, upping their record to 6-3. St. Francis falls to 7-2.
“This was a very good win for our Warriors,” stated Coach Bill Heath, “As St. Francis is a team that is close to getting into the top 25, as they always receive votes on the poll.” The WIU men are currently ranked 16 in the nation in the NAIA.
Webber played without their #1 player, Rafael Teixeira and without Tyler Heath, both out with flu like symptoms. WIU took the lead after the completion of doubles, 2-1. Winning at #1 doubles was Philippe Andermatt and Caio Cardoso, 8-5. The other doubles point came from Marcel Schmitt and Joonas Jalkenen, at #3 doubles, 8-5.
The Warriors swept all 6 singles matches. The winners were: #1 singles Andermatt, 6-1, 5-7, 10-2; #2 singles Jusso Tapaneinen, 6-3, 6-4; #3 singles Caio Cardoso, 6-3, 6-1; #4 singles Thiago Marion, 6-4, 6-1; #5 singles Heikki Riikonen, 6-1, 6-0; and #6 singles Marcel Schmitt, 6-2, 6-2.
WIU will be playing Tuesday in Winter Park. The Warriors will play #25 ranked Aquinas College (MI) at Azalea Lane Park at 11:30 a.m.
